Endocannabinoids and Dopamine Balance Basal Ganglia Output

چکیده

The entopeduncular nucleus is one of the basal ganglia's output nuclei, thereby controlling ganglia information processing. Entopeduncular neurons integrate GABAergic inputs from Striatum and globus pallidus, together with glutamatergic subthalamic nucleus. We show that endocannabinoids dopamine interact to modulate long-term plasticity all these primary afferents Our results suggest interplay between determines balance direct pathway (striatum) indirect (globus pallidus) in output. Furthermore, we demonstrate that, despite lack axon collaterals, transferred neighboring via endocannabinoid diffusion. These transform prevailing view as a feedforward “relay” an intricate control unit, which may play vital role process action selection.

An ultra-short dopamine pathway regulates basal ganglia output.

Substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) is a key basal ganglia output nucleus critical for movement control. Its GABA-containing projection neurons intermingle with nigral dopamine (DA) neuron dendrites. Here we show that SNr GABA neurons coexpress dopamine D(1) and D(5) receptor mRNAs and also mRNA for TRPC3 channels. Dopamine induced an inward current in these neurons and increased their firin...

GABAergic output of the basal ganglia.

Using GABAergic outputs from the SNr or GP(i), the basal ganglia exert inhibitory control over several motor areas in the brainstem which in turn control the central pattern generators for the basic motor repertoire including eye-head orientation, locomotion, mouth movements, and vocalization. These movements are by default kept suppressed by tonic rapid firing of SNr/GP(i) neurons, but can be ...

Striatal dopamine modulates basal ganglia output and regulates social context-dependent behavioral variability through D1 receptors.

Cortico-basal ganglia (BG) circuits are thought to promote the acquisition of motor skills through reinforcement learning. In songbirds, a specialized portion of the BG is responsible for song learning and plasticity. This circuit generates song variability that underlies vocal experimentation in young birds and modulates song variability depending on the social context in adult birds. When mal...

Dopamine release in the basal ganglia.

Dopamine (DA) is a key transmitter in the basal ganglia, yet DA transmission does not conform to several aspects of the classic synaptic doctrine. Axonal DA release occurs through vesicular exocytosis and is action potential- and Ca²⁺-dependent. However, in addition to axonal release, DA neurons in midbrain exhibit somatodendritic release by an incompletely understood, but apparently exocytotic...

Basal ganglia output reflects internally-specified movements

How movements are selected is a fundamental question in systems neuroscience. While many studies have elucidated the sensorimotor transformations underlying stimulus-guided movements, less is known about how internal goals - critical drivers of goal-directed behavior - guide movements. The basal ganglia are known to bias movement selection according to value, one form of internal goal. Here, we...
